Hey Paige, I thought you did a really nice job with your micro teaching 1 lesson. I liked how you incorporated both technology and a hands on activity into the lesson. Having the newspaper printouts was a cool idea because it gives the students a chance to explore something to break up the regular direct instruction. I thought you did a really great job of pretending you were in front of a real classroom. You had a fun presence that makes it so the students want to participate, because they will be interested in what is coming next. I liked how you linked the lesson to the rest of your unit as well, and it was clear that you had an overall goal in mind when you picked the newspapers you did.
Hi Paige, your lesson was really well put together. I liked that you brought in excerpts from civil war era newspapers because it made me feel a connection to the people who lived in the era. Seeing what they cared about and how vocal they were sounded almost like social media in slow motion. This kind of connection really engaged me and I enjoyed doing the examples. Knowing that you need to ask questions about the sources of an article is useful because it needs to be done whenever somebody reads an article. To conclude, your lesson was done well and your presence was positive. The only room for improvement I noticed was to change how the students present the information to make it more engaging.
Hey Paige, here is my reflection your microteaching lesson.
I thought the idea for the lesson was great, because analyzing newspapers and documents in general can be a very useful skill.
The fact that you provided some background information was great, and your explanation of what you wanted out of the students was also well done.
The only advice I have for improvement is maybe to provide a few more examples or require a little more in depth analysis of the examples you provide, since the group and individual practice went pretty quickly. I suppose this is kind of the nature of the beast with direct instruction and I ran into the same problem, but I also felt that your questions were a bit repetitive, so I would suggest maybe working on some questions that address progressively higher and higher levels of Bloom's.
Overall, I think you did a nice job with the lesson. Nice idea, good presence, effective execution. Good work!
Hello Paige! I really enjoyed your teaching for multiple reasons. First being that I remember having trouble citing sources in school because I had trouble identifying the information I needed to use (such as the editor, or location of the publication), my teachers always assumed I knew how to find them. You covered this information perfectly, and your choice of this as your topic shows that you know what students need time and instruction to learn. On top of having thoughtfully selected your topic, your teaching style is amazing. You were engaging and comfortable and not rushed or nervous. You acted like a seasoned teacher. Your interaction with the class helped you avoid the one pitfall I was worried about, which was that this type of lesson can easily get repetitive. By interacting with us all and asking questions about the sources you make it enjoyable, and your use of humor lightened the mood and gave the lesson an air of unpredictability.
Hey, Paige! Sorry about how late this is. I never could find anyone's blogs until I realized I could click the comments you guys wrote on mine! Your Microteaching I lesson was great. I really thought you used great materials and really drove the lesson home. You have the voice of a teacher and it shows. Your use of humor is always amusing in your lessons, and it is comforting for students to know that their teacher is not a robot. Nice work! :)
